When Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) launched Unlocking Potential: VCU’s Campaign for the Future, the goal was not simply to announce a campaign, but to create a moment worthy of its ambition. Hosted in the Stuart C. Siegel Center, the launch brought together 500 close friends of the university, including donors, alumni leaders, and foundation board members, for an experience designed to feel elevated, immersive, and unmistakably VCU.
Level5 partnered with VCU to lead the creative concepting and experiential framework for the event, shaping a bold, emotionally resonant launch that brought the campaign’s pillars to life through design, storytelling, and live production. The result was an evening that balanced scale with intimacy and strategy with surprise, setting the tone for the campaign’s public phase.
At the heart of the evening was a tightly choreographed main stage program designed to move seamlessly between inspiration and impact. Level5 developed a scenic system centered on the idea of portals, architectural doorways that opened and closed throughout the program to reinforce the campaign’s central theme of Unlocking Potential.
These portals served as both a visual anchor and a narrative device, revealing stories, speakers, and moments tied to the campaign’s four pillars: Students, Faculty, Research, and Institutional Excellence. As the program unfolded, the stage evolved in real time, using motion, light, and scale to underscore the idea that each investment opens new doors for individuals, communities, and the university as a whole.
Following the main stage program, the experience extended beyond the seats and onto the arena floor. The transition from program to reception transformed the arena into a space of discovery, reinforcing the idea that the campaign’s impact is not confined to a single moment, but continues wherever those doors are opened next. Level5 designed a series of portal-inspired Engagement Zone structures that invited guests to step inside the campaign itself. Each Zone aligned with one of the campaign’s four pillars, offering opportunities for exploration, interaction, and conversation.
