The Challenge: Outgrowing a Traditional Booth

UL Research Institutes’ Fire Safety Research Institute needed a booth that reflected their mission, strengthened their visibility, and created deeper engagement with the fire service community.

Going into FDIC International 2026, they set out to solve for four things:

  • Room to bring people in
Attendees often approached the booth from the front only. ULRI’s Fire Safety Research Institute wanted an open floor that drew people all the way in.
  • A booth that felt like them
They wanted their space to feel like home to the fire service: warm, grounded, built around the community they serve.
  • Room to do the work
Space for meetings, filming, and deeper conversations, without giving up display and demo areas.
  • A footprint that couldn’t grow
The booth size was fixed. The team needed a creative way to add presence and function without more floor space.

Before sketching anything, our team asked what FDIC meant to them. The answer, their firehouse roots and research library, became the booth.

Their Role in the Fire Service Community

More than 38,000 fire service professionals gather at FDIC International each year. For ULRI’s Fire Safety Research Institute, it’s the room where their research meets the people who use it, and in 2026 they wanted a booth that lived up to that. They partnered with The Expo Group to make it happen.

ULRI’s Fire Safety Research Institute is dedicated to addressing the world’s evolving fire safety risks and emerging dangers, conducting research and turning the findings into practical, applicable considerations for fire service professionals to use in their everyday work.

Our Solution: Build Up, Not Out

A Vertical Expansion Strategy

With 400 square feet of space and nowhere
to grow outward, we went up, and built a custom double-deck that:

  • Increased their usable space by 192
    sq. ft. across two levels
  • Created a commanding presence on
    the show floor
  • Separated high traffic engagement
    areas from private meeting zones

A Firehouse‑Inspired Design

To reconnect ULRI’s Fire Safety Research Institute with their roots, the booth incorporated:

  • Brick walls and story-driven graphics
  • Warm, inviting furniture chosen
    intentionally over modern, white pieces

“The graphics of library shelves showcased some of our history and made our visitors feel immersed in the resource library. The brick walls also gave off the station vibe. It felt like our ‘home and we were inviting the firehouse to come hang with us vs. come buy something.”

On Site Execution

Two things went sideways on the floor: a hanging-sign mix-up and a missing table. ULRI’s Fire Safety Research Institute never had to chase either one.

The onsite team caught both, reconfigured the layout, and had the booth matching the design before doors opened.

Results

Increased engagement and improved traffic flow in an environment that resonated with attendees. The team received enthusiastic feedback from key stakeholders and booth visitors.

“Out of the last five years at FDIC, this was the best and most cohesive design. My team and most importantly, my leadership was pleased and everyone who saw it, loved it. It felt very exclusive and special to have a second story to our booth that gave us a top-floor view across the entire expo. Pretty cool!”
